Audition Information
Our Orchestras
Philharmonic Orchestra allows musicians of the Huron Orchestra Program to develop and hone their musical skills. Students have the opportunity to experience a variety of performance settings including string orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solos. No audition is required to register for Philharmonic Orchestra.

Concert Gold and Green Orchestras are comprised of students who demonstrate a high level of achievement on their instruments. Performance opportunities include full orchestra, string orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solos. Participation in Concert Green and Concert Gold Orchestra is by audition only.

Symphony Orchestra is comprised of the most advanced students in the Huron Orchestra Program. Performance opportunities include full orchestra, string orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solos. Participation in Symphony Orchestra is by audition only.
Listen to the Symphony Orchestra perform the Shostakovich, Symphony 5, 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky, Afro-American Symphony by Still, Harry Potter, Toronto Tour Performance, and Spain Tour Performance.
2025-2026 Audition Procedures
Middle School Students
Students in the Clague, Scarlett, and Tappan Middle School Orchestras and Huron High School will have an opportunity to audition in person at their school at the end of March and the beginning of April

All Other Incoming Students
Students who are current Huron students or from other schools may choose to audition with one of the two options listed below.
1) Audition in person after school in the Huron Orchestra Room on Monday, March 23rd, Tuesday, March 24th or Wednesday, March 25th
2) Submit a video recording of each component of your audition using the Huron Orchestras Auditions Upload Form by March 29rd, 2026.
The recorded audition should include one video of all 3 scales, one video that includes your solo, and one video for your Symphony Excerpts (if auditioning for Symphony)

Part I Scales
Please record the following three (3) scales in one (1) continuous video, metronome quarter = 48-60, four (4) slurred eighth notes per bow
Concert Orchestras
2 Octave Scales
(student choice)
- D, G, A, OR E Major
- Ab, Bb, Eb OR F Major (Basses choose F or Bb Major)
- One melodic minor scale of your choice
Symphony Orchestra
3 Octave Scales
(teacher choice)
- Major scales to be selected from up to 4 sharps/flats
(Basses 3 octave E, F, G Major only, all remaining major scales 2 octave) - Melodic Minor scales to be selected from up to 3 sharps/flats (Basses 3 octave e, f#, g only, all remaining scales 2 octave)

Audition Tips for Success
When Practicing…
- Use a metronome!
- Practice your weakest scales until they become your favorite and best!
- Strive for your best intonation, beautiful vibrato and technique at ALL times!
- Be Smart when you practice! Don’t rehearse mistakes. Use of all of your practice tools: Slow before fast, long before short, dissect and stack, alter rhythms, play backwards and forwards, practice only open strings, etc.
When Performing…
- Be confident in your preparation and show off your best posture, technique, musicianship and beautiful sound. BREATHE 🙂
